Our History

The Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center (CRC) is a 31 year-old settlement house located in North Columbus. It was originally organized by a local church to help people in the community and continues that tradition today.

In 1973 the CRC became a freestanding, non-denominational social services agency and in 1975 became a United Way member agency. The CRC is a member in good standing of the Columbus Federation of Settlements, the Clintonville Chamber of Commerce, and the United Way Professional Advisory Council.

As part of the century-old settlement house movement, the CRC is a community-based social services agency that brings people together to help individuals and families build upon their strengths. It promotes self-sufficiency while respecting individual worth, rights and dignity - thus creating a greater quality of life in the community.

Historically, the CRC has developed programs in three service areas:

FAMILY SERVICES

Each week the Family Services program distributes nearly two tons of food and toiletries to needy individuals and families through its food pantry. The program also provides emergency support to families in crisis and makes available information, referrals and links they need to help them meet their other needs such as clothing, housing, healthcare and integration into society.

The ultimate goal of the program is to provide each family with the tools necessary to become self-sufficient.

YOUTH SERVICES

The Kids Club is a no-cost child care program that operates at the Clinton Elementary School. It was created to provide working families and single parents of low-to-moderate incomes a safe, structured option for their children's after-school time. The program serves children in grades K-5.

The Kids Club has an average daily attendance of 60 children during the school year and the summer months. School-year activities include structured homework time, targeted tutoring for at-risk students, nutritious snacks, supervised, unstructured playtime, crafts, computers and organized "club" activities including the Drama Club, the Gardening Club and the History Club.  There’s even monthly visits from the Ohio Historical Society and Family Potlucks.

SENIOR SERVICES

The Senior Services program is designed to maintain seniors safely and independently in their own homes. It guards against displacement and social isolation with home visits and social outings. It also provides assistance with advocacy issues, health and safety-related home repairs and transportation.

The Outreach staff drives an average of 60 seniors a week to the grocery store, shopping, and to fun places such as the Columbus Museum of Art and the Franklin Park Conservatory. CRC volunteer drivers logged over 6,000 miles last year transporting area seniors to and from medical appointments, LifeCare Alliance Dining Centers and monthly activities such as the Breakfast Club brunch, potlucks and the Coffee Klatch so seniors can enjoy a free meal and positive social interaction in a safe and stimulating environment.
