UPDATE, 6-2-2015:

Great crowd, sponsors make for memorable Memorial Day 5K

The 8th annual Ring Around the Roses Memorial Day 5K Walk-Run generated lots of memories, money and more May 25 at Whetstone High School and the adjacent Park of Roses.

Nearly 300 runners participated in the main event, won by local runner Evan Schwartz in 15 minutes, 31.6 seconds. His younger sister, Elli, defended her title in the women’s division by finishing the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 15 seconds. Prizes were awarded for the top three male and top three female finishers, as well as age-group winners for eight age divisions from 14-and-younger up through 70-and-older.

Before the main race, two Kids Fun Runs were held and the young runners seemed to have a great time. They were warmed up by Chris Quickert, of Home School Gym, who worked the youngsters through a series of calisthenics to get them ready for their 100y and 200y runs.

Visitors to this year’s event found other ways to enjoy their morning besides running. More than a dozen sponsors and vendors were on site, adding to the festive atmosphere by sharing information, refreshments and promotional items. While final numbers are still being tallied, the event has raised at least $18,000 — with all profits after expenses going toward CRC programs.
